Microsoft Employees Disrupt Wii U Best Buy EventsRemember how Nintendo was showcasing some of their E3 games at participating Best Buy stores around the country? Well, apparently Microsoft employees have been hired to go to these events and preach about the Xbox One and make comments like "why would you buy a outdated Wii U when the Xbox One is right around the corner?"
However, the employees aren't getting what they hoped for. Most customers just start bashing the Xbox One in response. Seriously, Microsoft, the people attending these Best Buy Wii U events are people who are intimately familiar with the crap you pulled at E3. They ain't takin' your shit.
At first I thought this might just be a case of one really loyal Microsoft employee taking matters into his own hands (especially since the original source was /v/), but reports have come in from numerous Best Buy's around the country that indicate many Microsoft employees have ambushed the demo lines trying to persuade people to switch to the Xbox One.

Please Pants Responsibly (Paper Notebooks FTW)

There are two ways to write a novel. Plotting (you make an outline, a plan, a roadmap if you will, and then you sit down and write it) and pantsing (you write "by the seat of your pants, throwing caution to the wind). So when I get asked if I'm a plotter or a pantser, I'm all like er, uh, hold on, let me? Pantser? I think? But I kind of, um, do planny things?
And it gets kind of awkward because in these inarticulate moments I have managed to confuse everyone including myself. And probably spilled a drink.
In recent discussions, however, I've had a bit of a revelation, silly as it is. I've realized that I -- like many writers -- am a plotter/pantser hybrid. And perhaps what I'm doing is something we could call Pantsing Responsibly. And, maybe, just maybe, I could share some of my responsible pantsing tips with other writers. Starting with paper notebooks.

The Used Game ParadigmOver the course of this past generation I've been watching the video game market react to the way it's been forced to deal with increasing changes. I've come out against used game sales and even written a journal about boycotting GameStop because (like most people at the time) I believed they were the root cause of all the problems the video game industry has. But that's something I don't believe now as intently as i did then. From where I sit, piracy and used games sales are a problem, but not in the way game companies want us to believe that they are.
Used games are a good thing for consumers. We get to try games out, and if we don't like what we see or finish it early, we trade it in and try another title instead. It's a very good system for us since video game rentals are much harder to come by. EPIC JOURNEY!

Tonight I had an epic adventure. I went to the Target downtown looking for the camera I want, which they had for 150 less than Amazon, but only for today. They were out. They told me the Target in Colma had one and the Target in Serramonte had two. So I went to Colma. No luck. Walked to Serramonte, found out that when Target says it has one at a store (UPC in system), they mean the display model which they will not sell you. (Would have been nice to know this two Targets ago.) Ran (and I mean, literally, RAN, as in on my feet) all over suburbia.

Suburbia is scary btw. The sidewalks run out for no reason. They don't warn you, they just stop. On a dark road, with no shoulder, a four foot tall hedge to your right, and no indication of sidewalk to connect to on the far side. I ran for a quarter of a mile, looking over my shoulder, ready to jump into a hedge should any car come barrelling down my lane. (You may ask how I got there, and I got there by taxi. But I was not being got back thither since my phone stopped working.)

After hauling ass all over Colma and Daly City ON FOOT IN THE DARK IN THE POURING RAIN, I made the discovery that the Best Buy in San Francisco, a mere hop and a skip from the 16th Street Bart station had the same camera for the same sale price. And yes, only for today. I skibbled like mad for the BART, got downtown, and lo, the Best Buy had closed. But John was able to order the camera over the interwebs AND have it for me to pick up in the store tomorrow.

I should feel a little silly for having hauled ass for nothing...but actually I ended up feeling mighty, as I faced the elements and ran through the storm. I mean, I got three miles in, flirted with danger, and made it back to the city safely. And whee for the exercise. I didn't feel winded or broken. Plus the storm made it easy to run around without overheating. This always warm super power has to be good for something.

Sounds like quite an adventure. I find myself searching all over town looking for the perfect thing to add to my collection. This actually reminds me of when I was looking for the movie Captain America: The First Avenger on DVD. I tried Best Buy, Amoeba, City Target, but all those places sold it for like $20 or even $28. Finally, I heard that a Rasputin Records and Movies had moved into the Haight Ashbury neighborhood and I looked there. Sure enough I found Captain America: The First Avenger for like $9 or $10. What a price! That's probably the highest I'll pay for a standard DVD film.
